MCLL Student Achievement
| Many students who have studied foreign languages with us at CNU can boast of achievements in many different areas of academic and professional life. On this page, we honor their impressive achievements and thank them for their contribution. Take a look at what current students and recent alumni have been up to! |
Every year numerous students of foreign languages and classical studies participate in PAIDEIA, the Undergraduate Research Conference at CNU. In 2007 two panels showcased papers read in Spanish.
In the 2007 student government elections, three MCLL students got elected:
President: Andrew "Heinz" Lundsten, German/Business major
Vice president: Lacey Howard, French major, German minor
Senator-at-large: Jennifer Johnson, German/Business major
CLASSICAL STUDIES
Genevieve Conger received an MCLL Scholarship to participate in the CNU Seminar in Greece program in May 2006.
Brittany Bishop (Latin) received an MCLL Scholarship to participate in the CNU Seminar in Greece program in May 2006.
Raychel Loney directed the Classics Club’s production of Euripides’ Medea, starring Jennifer Altizer as Medea and Bryan Austin as Jason. Kim Dahms, Megan Geers, Ashley Weber, and Amber Wixtrom performed the choral odes, the translations and music for which were composed by Dr. Bradley Buszard.
Michael Sullivan has been accepted into the Rutgers Study Abroad Program in Greece for Summer 2008. Michael was also inducted into Alpha Mu Gamma, the national honor society celebrating achievement in the study of foreign languages.

Thomas Barton (’08) is the first student in the history of Christopher Newport University to graduate with a concentration in Classical Studies, which he earned through the Interdisciplinary Studies Program. Thomas has been accepted into the prestigious Post-Baccalaureate Program in Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. During his academic career, he presented his research at Paideia, the CNU Undergraduate Research Conference (2007 & 2008) and at the MARCUS conference for undergraduate research at Sweet Briar College (2007). Thomas was awarded the Cupola Prize at Paideia 2007 for his paper, “To Be or Not To Be: Suicide and Heroism in Sophocles’ Ajax,” which was subsequently published in CNU’s online journal, The Cupola. Last but certainly not least, Thomas was inducted into Alpha Mu Gamma, the national honor society celebrating achievement in the study of foreign languages. |
Elizabeth (Lieske) Tuttle, a graduate of 2006, is teaching Latin at Kempsville High School.
FRENCH
Abbie Byess was awarded a French Program scholarship for a Summer Study Abroad Program in 2005.
Sarah Janeski is the 2007 French Scholarship recipient and she will study in Aix-en-Provence through the Institute for American Universities.
Felice Perry was awarded the French Scholarship for Study Abroad in 2004.
Holly Ross was awarded a fellowship to do an internship with NATO in summer 2005.
Beth Spruill was awarded the French Scholarship for Study Abroad in 2003.
Crystal Woodward was the 2006 French Scholarship recipient and studied at the University Paul Valery in Montpellier.
Alumni
GERMAN
Daniel Alexander has been accepted into Wayne State University's Junior Year in Munich program
for the spring of 2008. Daniel received a scholarship from the Max Kade Foundation in the amount of $2500 for
his trip.
David Eger won a Fulbright Fellowship.
Jeffrey Gregerson was the third CNU student to complete the 5-week summer program at the Technische Universität Darmstadt in the summer of 2006.
In addition to being the new SGA president, Andrew “Heinz” Lundsten is spending the summer of 2007 in Germany. He plans to take 12 credits of language courses and to travel throughout the country. Jennifer Johnson will also enroll in six credits, at the Goethe Institute in Munich, and will join Andrew for much of the traveling.
Alexandria Ruble, a double major in history and German, will be spending the summer in Oxford and will then join CNU’s own program in Prague in the fall. Even though she’s only in her first year at CNU, Alex has already made her mark by presenting at the 2007 Paideia conference.
Trevor Wright spent the 2004-2005 academic year studying in Munich with the Wayne State University Junior Year in Munich program. He received a Max Kade Foundation Fellowship Grant that will partially support his participation in the program.
Alumni
Cait Finnegan, a minor in German and a major in biology (2007), has been accepted into the Royal School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Scott Jaeschke, who received his BA in 2006, has enrolled in a master’s program in educational administration at Old Dominion University. Scott also celebrated his marriage to Sarah McElwee ’05 in December. Congratulations!
Lauren Killip, German minor and theater major (2007), served as stage manager for CNU’s production of Actus Fidei.
Jeffrey Mason, a 2007 graduate, has been accepted into the Peace Corps. He will be doing community building in Kazakhstan starting summer 2007.
Christina Parmann Willett, who received a BA in German and Spanish in 2006, presented a paper at the national conference of the Alpha Mu Gamma honors society in September 2006. Christina, who is currently working toward her MAT in Spanish, will be teaching German and Spanish at Warwick High School starting in fall 2007. Congratulations too to Christina on her marriage in spring 2006!
Leslie Winall, a graduate of 2002, won a Fulbright Fellowship to teach in Austria in 2002-2003. She is currently enrolled in a doctoral program in German at Washington University in St. Louis, where she has been awarded a full scholarship to complete her Ph.D. studies.
ITALIAN
Joanna Andrusko, Carla Briscoe, Luisa Maraboli, and Maggie McDermott were inducted into Alpha Mu Gamma, the national honor society celebrating achievement in the study of foreign languages, in 2008. Joanna, Carla, Luisa, and Maggie are the first students at CNU to become Alpha Mu Gamma members for Italian (Ms. Andrusko and Ms. McDermott were also inductees respecively for Arabic and Spanish).
SPANISH
Michelle Hinkelman attended the University of Virginia's study abroad program in Valencia in the spring semester of 2005.
Chanelle Layman was awarded the Doris Reppen Scholarship to study in Granada, Spain in Fall 2005.
Jessica Smith was awarded an MCLL Scholarship for the CNU Seminar in Andalusia in May 2004.
Evelyn Valerio is Master Police Officer for the Newport News Police Department. Officer Valerio frequently uses her knowledge of Spanish on the job and is currently engaged in recruiting new officers who are bilingual.
Christine Warner was awarded an MCLL Scholarship for the CNU Seminar in Andalusia in May 2004.
Susan Watkins was inducted into Alpha Chi, the National Honor Scholarship Society. She invited Dr. Elaine Miller, Assistant Professor of Spanish, to the cerimony.
Alumni
Jennifer Lopez ('07) is teaching Spanish at Phoebus High School.
Querube Barber ('07) was inducted into the National Collegiate Foreign Language Honor Society in December 2003. She has been teaching Spanish in a private school since August 2001.
Francisca Cronk, after graduating from CNU in 2004, received a Master Degree from the University of Salamanca in June 2005 and taught Spanish language and culture courses at CNU in 2005-06.
Natasha McKellar, a graduate of 2006, has been accepted into ODU's Linguistic Program.
Brandon Stuver was awarded an MCLL Scholarship for the CNU Seminar in Andalusia in May 2004. He now lives in Spain where he's taking graduate courses toward a Master degree.
Evelyn Valerio is Master Police Officer for the Newport News Police Department. Officer Valerio frequently uses her knowledge of Spanish on the job and is currently engaged in recruiting new officers who are bilingual.
Christina Parmann Willett, a double major in Spanish and German, and a MAT candidate in Spanish for 2007, has been selected as one of four CNU students to attend the Teachers of Promise Institute at James Madison University, a program that honors Virginia’s brightest stars--prospective teachers who have demonstrated professional commitment, achievement, and leadership while in their respective teacher preparation programs. Christina has then accepeted a job to teach Spanish at Warwick High School in Newport News starting fall 07.
Bethany (Betania) Wright, a graduate of 2003, after attending a summer language program at Middlebury College, has become a high school teacher. In summer 2006 she has taken a group of her students to Spain, together with the CNU flag!
