COURSE DESCRIPTION : MLAN 395/GERM 395: Imaginary Castles and Concrete Identities:
Reconstructing German History in the “New” Berlin
Participants in the seminar will study the history, art, and culture of Berlin with a focus on the ways in which history has left its mark on today's German capital. Lectures, discussions, and guided tours will analyze Berlin cultural sites with an emphasis on how they represent the divided city, the Nazi period, the rise of Prussia leading to the 1871 German unification, and Berlin as the capital of Germany today.
Excursions to Dresden (the “Florence on the Elbe”), Potsdam (Frederick the Great's residence), and an optional trip to Weimar and the Wartburg castle (where Martin Luther translated the Bible) will explore the links between Germany's cultural past and its present. Student assessment will be based on a combination of readings, cultural projects, and a research paper. 3 credits
*NOTE : all participants in the CNU Seminar in Berlin must register for the course, but anyone not wishing to receive college credit for the class may register as an auditor.
